Allah's Mercy in the Chapter of Mary, the mother of Jesus

Allah Is Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful

Surah Maryam, the Chapter of Mary, mother of Jesus, draws the heart repeatedly to one of Allah’s most beautiful names: Ar-Rahman (ٱلرَّحْمَٰن), the Most Merciful. This name appears 16 times in the surah’s numbered verses—more than in any other chapter—and 17 times when the opening Bismillah is included.

The repetition is deeply meaningful. Surah Maryam is filled with answered prayers, miraculous births, protection, guidance, warnings, and promises. Together, these passages show that Allah’s mercy surrounds His servants in ease and hardship, hope and accountability.

Sixteen Mentions of Ar-Rahman in Surah Maryam

Mary seeks refuge in the Most Merciful when the angel appears before her:

قالت اني اعوذ بالرحمان منك ان كنت تقيا ١٨
قَالَتْ إِنِّىٓ أَعُوذُ بِٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ مِنكَ إِن كُنتَ تَقِيًّۭا ١٨

قَالَتۡ إِنِّيٓ أَعُوذُ بِٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ مِنكَ إِن كُنتَ تَقِيّٗا ١٨ 

She appealed, “I truly seek refuge in the Most Compassionate from you! ˹So leave me alone˺ if you are God-fearing.”

In the solitude of childbirth, Allah provides Mary with comfort and provision:

فكلي واشربي وقري عينا فاما ترين من البشر احدا فقولي اني نذرت للرحمان صوما فلن اكلم اليوم انسيا ٢٦
فَكُلِى وَٱشْرَبِى وَقَرِّى عَيْنًۭا ۖ فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ ٱلْبَشَرِ أَحَدًۭا فَقُولِىٓ إِنِّى نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ صَوْمًۭا فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّۭا ٢٦

فَكُلِي وَٱشۡرَبِي وَقَرِّي عَيۡنٗاۖ فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡبَشَرِ أَحَدٗا فَقُولِيٓ إِنِّي نَذَرۡتُ لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ صَوۡمٗا فَلَنۡ أُكَلِّمَ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ إِنسِيّٗا ٢٦ 

So eat and drink, and put your heart at ease. But if you see any of the people, say, ‘I have vowed silence to the Most Compassionate, so I am not talking to anyone today.’”

Prophet Abraham warns his father with compassion, calling him away from disobedience:

يا ابت لا تعبد الشيطان ان الشيطان كان للرحمان عصيا ٤٤
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ لَا تَعْبُدِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ ۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ كَانَ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَصِيًّۭا ٤٤

يَٰٓأَبَتِ لَا تَعۡبُدِ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنَۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنَ كَانَ لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ عَصِيّٗا ٤٤ 

O  dear father! Do not worship Satan. Surely Satan is ever rebellious against the Most Compassionate.

His warning itself is merciful—an invitation to turn back before punishment comes:

يا ابت اني اخاف ان يمسك عذاب من الرحمان فتكون للشيطان وليا ٤٥
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ أَن يَمَسَّكَ عَذَابٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ فَتَكُونَ لِلشَّيْطَـٰنِ وَلِيًّۭا ٤٥

يَٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّيٓ أَخَافُ أَن يَمَسَّكَ عَذَابٞ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ فَتَكُونَ لِلشَّيۡطَٰنِ وَلِيّٗا ٤٥ 

O  dear father! I truly fear that you will be touched by a torment from the Most Compassionate, and become Satan’s companion ˹in Hell˺.”

Those whom Allah guided respond to His revelation with humility and tears:

اولايك الذين انعم الله عليهم من النبيين من ذرية ادم وممن حملنا مع نوح ومن ذرية ابراهيم واسراييل وممن هدينا واجتبينا اذا تتلى عليهم ايات الرحمان خروا سجدا وبكيا ۩ ٥٨
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِن ذُرِّيَّةِ ءَادَمَ وَمِمَّنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍْ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّةِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَمِمَّنْ هَدَيْنَا وَٱجْتَبَيْنَآ ۚ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ خَرُّواْ سُجَّدًۭا وَبُكِيًّۭا ۩ ٥٨

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنۡعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِن ذُرِّيَّةِ ءَادَمَ وَمِمَّنۡ حَمَلۡنَا مَعَ نُوحٖ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّةِ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ وَمِمَّنۡ هَدَيۡنَا وَٱجۡتَبَيۡنَآۚ إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ خَرُّواْۤ سُجَّدٗاۤ وَبُكِيّٗا ۩ ٥٨ 

Those were ˹some of˺ the prophets who Allah has blessed from among the descendants of Adam, and of those We carried with Noah ˹in the Ark˺, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those We ˹rightly˺ guided and chose. Whenever the revelations of the Most Compassionate were recited to them, they fell down, prostrating and weeping.

The Most Merciful promises His servants gardens beyond anything they can presently see:

جنات عدن التي وعد الرحمان عباده بالغيب انه كان وعده ماتيا ٦١
جَنَّـٰتِ عَدْنٍ ٱلَّتِى وَعَدَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ عِبَادَهُۥ بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ وَعْدُهُۥ مَأْتِيًّۭا ٦١

جَنَّٰتِ عَدۡنٍ ٱلَّتِي وَعَدَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ عِبَادَهُۥ بِٱلۡغَيۡبِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ وَعۡدُهُۥ مَأۡتِيّٗا ٦١ 

˹They will be in˺ the Gardens of Eternity, promised in trust by the Most Compassionate to His servants. Surely His promise will be fulfilled.

Even the warning of judgment is mercy because it awakens people before it is too late:

ثم لننزعن من كل شيعة ايهم اشد على الرحمان عتيا ٦٩
ثُمَّ لَنَنزِعَنَّ مِن كُلِّ شِيعَةٍ أَيُّهُمْ أَشَدُّ عَلَى ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عِتِيًّۭا ٦٩

ثُمَّ لَنَنزِعَنَّ مِن كُلِّ شِيعَةٍ أَيُّهُمۡ أَشَدُّ عَلَى ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ عِتِيّٗا ٦٩ 

Then We will certainly begin by dragging out of every group the ones most defiant to the Most Compassionate.

Worldly appearances do not overturn Allah’s promise or His perfect judgment:

قل من كان في الضلالة فليمدد له الرحمان مدا حتى اذا راوا ما يوعدون اما العذاب واما الساعة فسيعلمون من هو شر مكانا واضعف جندا ٧٥
قُلْ مَن كَانَ فِى ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةِ فَلْيَمْدُدْ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ مَدًّا ۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْاْ مَا يُوعَدُونَ إِمَّا ٱلْعَذَابَ وَإِمَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ هُوَ شَرٌّۭ مَّكَانًۭا وَأَضْعَفُ جُندًۭا ٧٥

قُلۡ مَن كَانَ فِي ٱلضَّلَٰلَةِ فَلۡيَمۡدُدۡ لَهُ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ مَدًّاۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوۡاْ مَا يُوعَدُونَ إِمَّا ٱلۡعَذَابَ وَإِمَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ فَسَيَعۡلَمُونَ مَنۡ هُوَ شَرّٞ مَّكَانٗا وَأَضۡعَفُ جُندٗا ٧٥ 

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Whoever is ˹entrenched˺ in misguidance, the Most Compassionate will allow them plenty of time, until—behold!—they face what they are threatened with: either the torment or the Hour. Only then will they realize who is worse in position and inferior in manpower.”

No one can claim knowledge of Allah’s unseen promise without His authority:

اطلع الغيب ام اتخذ عند الرحمان عهدا ٧٨
أَطَّلَعَ ٱلْغَيْبَ أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَهْدًۭا ٧٨

أَطَّلَعَ ٱلۡغَيۡبَ أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ عَهۡدٗا ٧٨ 

Has he looked into the unseen or taken a pledge from the Most Compassionate?

The righteous will be gathered before the Most Merciful as honored guests:

يوم نحشر المتقين الى الرحمان وفدا ٨٥
يَوْمَ نَحْشُرُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ إِلَى ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ وَفْدًۭا ٨٥

يَوۡمَ نَحۡشُرُ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ إِلَى ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ وَفۡدٗا ٨٥ 

˹Watch for˺ the Day We will gather the righteous before the Most Compassionate as an honoured delegation,

Intercession belongs only to those who have received a covenant from Him:

لا يملكون الشفاعة الا من اتخذ عند الرحمان عهدا ٨٧
لَّا يَمْلِكُونَ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَهْدًۭا ٨٧

لَّا يَمۡلِكُونَ ٱلشَّفَٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ عَهۡدٗا ٨٧ 

None will have the right to intercede, except those who have taken a covenant from the Most Compassionate. 

The surah firmly rejects the claim that the Most Merciful has a son:

وقالوا اتخذ الرحمان ولدا ٨٨
وَقَالُواْ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَلَدًۭا ٨٨

وَقَالُواْ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ وَلَدٗا ٨٨ 

They say, “The Most Compassionate has offspring.”

Such a claim contradicts His absolute perfection and majesty:

ان دعوا للرحمان ولدا ٩١
أَن دَعَوْاْ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ وَلَدًۭا ٩١

أَن دَعَوۡاْ لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ وَلَدٗا ٩١ 

in protest of attributing children to the Most Compassionate.

Allah needs no child; everything in creation belongs to Him and depends upon Him:

وما ينبغي للرحمان ان يتخذ ولدا ٩٢
وَمَا يَنْبَغِى لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا ٩٢

وَمَا يَنۢبَغِي لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا ٩٢ 

It does not befit ˹the majesty of˺ the Most Compassionate to have children.

Every being comes before the Most Merciful as a servant:

ان كل من في السماوات والارض الا اتي الرحمان عبدا ٩٣
إِن كُلُّ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّآ ءَاتِى ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَبْدًۭا ٩٣

إِن كُلُّ مَن فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَّآ ءَاتِي ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ عَبۡدٗا ٩٣ 

There is none in the heavens or the earth who will not return to the Most Compassionate in full submission.

The sequence closes with a beautiful promise: Allah places love around those who believe and do good:

ان الذين امنوا وعملوا الصالحات سيجعل لهم الرحمان ودا ٩٦
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَيَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وُدًّۭا ٩٦

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ سَيَجۡعَلُ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ وُدّٗا ٩٦ 

As for those who believe and do good, the Most Compassionate will ˹certainly˺ bless them with ˹genuine˺ love.

Mercy That Guides, Warns, and Loves

Surah Maryam teaches that Allah’s mercy is not limited to relief after hardship. His guidance is mercy. His provision is mercy. His promises are mercy, and even His warnings are merciful because they call people away from harm and back to Him.

Ar-Rahman is also the Lord of perfect truth. Surah Maryam honors Jesus as a prophet and servant of Allah while rejecting the claim that he is Allah’s son. This correction does not diminish divine mercy; it protects pure faith in the One who created Mary, Jesus, and all creation.

Never Lose Hope in Allah’s Mercy

The repeated name Ar-Rahman invites us to know Allah through His vast, all-encompassing mercy. The believer responds by trusting Him in hardship, accepting His guidance, turning back after sin, and doing righteous deeds. Surah Maryam leaves the heart with hope: the Most Merciful sees, guides, provides, forgives, and places love around those who believe and do good.
